All I did was read and read and read books.

Hm. Okay, that was disturbing.

But true anyway.

I was staring blankly at my CRS account when something suddenly caught my eye and got me thinking. But really, contrary to what you might be assuming, it’s not the Nyan Cat and the Comic Sans font that’s set up particularly for April Fool’s Day.

It’s that first line highlighted in red font. For quite a while, out of routine and well- an entire year of being called a freshman, it didn’t really occur to me that the “Freshman Preenlistment” announcement was no longer for me. Suddenly, I was a boring sophomore whom not many people (nor preenlisting procedures) really pay attention to. Suddenly, that entire year of freshie survival kits, freshman-only concerts, and a lot of firsts had already slipped away without my full grasp of it happening.

But before it really is too late, I’d like to look back on my year and be thankful for all the things I’ve learned and kept in mind: 

1. First, since this word is used an awful a lot, “freshie” is used instead of “freshman” for the sake of gender sensitivity.
2. “TBA means ‘To Be Announced’ and not ‘The Bahay ng Alumni’ or anything else. I’ve never been tricked into this since upperclassmen have already warned us about it.
3. The CASAA, as a place to eat and study in, really is a popular choice among freshies. And among my many visits there, I’ve also learned that…
4. the CASAA ninjas are real. Your plate—finished or not—will be taken from you if you don’t keep an eye on it. On occasions, though, the ninjas will be courteous enough to ask before they take your plate away.
5. The PEx website is an excellent source of information that can help you survive as a freshie. Their forums range from the things to keep in your bag to the profs to pick and avoid.
6. That reminds me, people usually use “profs” instead of “teachers.”
